Wise, Payoneer, and PayPal do not charge one universal fee. The result depends on where the client is, how they fund the payment, which currency you receive, whether you convert it, and where you withdraw it.

That is why a table copied from an old article can be misleading. A useful comparison asks one practical question: For the same total cost to the client, how much reaches my Philippine bank through each available route?

List every stage of the payment

Write the full route before comparing providers:

Client bank in USD -> provider balance in USD -> conversion to PHP -> Philippine bank

Then check for each possible cost:

  1. Funding or sender fee: What does the client pay to send?
  2. Receiving fee: What is deducted when the payment reaches your account?
  3. Exchange-rate cost: Is the displayed rate the market rate or a marked-up rate?
  4. Conversion fee: Is there a separate charge to change USD to PHP?
  5. Withdrawal fee: What does it cost to reach your bank or e-wallet?
  6. Intermediary fee: Can a bank between sender and recipient deduct an unknown amount?
  7. Marketplace deduction: Was a platform fee already taken before payout?

Do not add a marketplace fee to one option but omit it from another. Compare equivalent routes.

Scenario 1: A direct client pays from a US bank

Ask the client which transfer types they can use. Then check the receiving details actually available in your account.

Wise

If your Wise account shows eligible USD receiving details, enter the client’s payment amount and your PHP destination in the official quote. Review any receiving, conversion, and transfer charges before confirming. The relevant details are on Wise’s receive-fees page and Philippines pricing page.

Payoneer

Check whether your account can receive the client’s payment type. Bank-funded and card-funded requests may have different costs and eligibility. Then preview the PHP withdrawal and review Payoneer’s pricing.

PayPal

Confirm that the payment is a commercial transaction and review the fee and currency route displayed. PayPal’s Philippines cross-border fee help explains relevant categories. The Wise PayPal Philippines guide can help identify conversion questions, but the live PayPal screen is the source for your transaction.

Decision: Choose the route with an acceptable final PHP amount that both accounts can actually use. Do not ask the client to misclassify a business payment to avoid fees.

Scenario 2: A marketplace releases earnings

Start inside the marketplace’s payout settings. Only compare options that the platform currently supports for your account and country.

Payoneer is available as a payout route on some marketplaces, so it may be convenient even when another provider gives a better quote for a direct payment. Review Payoneer’s Philippines receiving guide and the fees shown in both the marketplace and Payoneer.

Wise account details may work for certain bank payout routes, but support depends on the platform, account, currency, and receiving details. Confirm compatibility with both services before adding the account.

PayPal may be available on a marketplace even when a client would not use it directly. Check what the marketplace deducts, what PayPal receives, and what your final withdrawal shows.

Decision: Include convenience, support, clearance time, and payment protection. A lower quoted conversion cost does not help if the marketplace rejects the route.

Build a same-moment comparison

Suppose a client has a fixed USD budget. Do not estimate the net amount from remembered percentages. Open all available official quotes close together and record:

Comparison item Wise Payoneer PayPal
Client’s total cost
Funding method
Amount received in provider balance
Exchange rate shown
Conversion charge
Withdrawal or transfer charge
Final PHP deposited
Availability estimate shown

Use the same amount, sending country, funding method, and Philippine destination. Take screenshots or save the quote details with the invoice because rates can move.

The simplest comparison metric is:

Effective payment cost = client’s total cost - value that reaches you

Keep currency conversion consistent when calculating the value. For an everyday decision, the final PHP deposit is often easier to compare than reconstructing a percentage.

Check occasional and recurring costs

A route that looks fine for one payment may have account, card, inactivity, minimum, or annual charges depending on the provider and account activity. These rules can change.

Do not open or keep an account solely because an old guide says it has no maintenance fee. Check the current terms and whether you will use it enough to justify the account.

Decision guide

  • Direct client with a supported bank transfer: Compare Wise, Payoneer, and your bank using a live net-PHP quote.
  • Upwork, Fiverr, or another marketplace: Begin with the payout methods that the platform officially supports for your account.
  • Client already uses PayPal: Compare the convenience against the complete receiving and withdrawal result, then price your work accordingly.
  • You need a specific currency balance: Check whether your account can receive, hold, and withdraw that currency and what happens during conversion.
  • This is your first transfer: Use a small test payment if practical, then verify names, account numbers, and the final destination.

Use How to Set Up Wise in the Philippines or How to Set Up Payoneer in the Philippines once you know which route you need.

If the payment ends in pesos, also compare a verified GCash account. If the client can send a bank wire and you want to keep USD, compare the full cost and balance requirements in the RCBC US Dollar account guide.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Comparing a Wise bank transfer with a PayPal card payment without noting the different funding method
  • Looking only at the receiving fee and ignoring the exchange rate
  • Forgetting the withdrawal from the provider to the local bank
  • Counting a marketplace fee as if the payout provider charged it
  • Assuming the client’s “sent” amount equals the amount entering your balance
  • Using a fee screenshot from another country or account type
  • Choosing the lowest estimate before confirming that your account is eligible

FAQ

Which provider is cheapest?

There is no permanent answer. Run the same live transaction through every route available to you and compare the final amount reaching your bank.

Is a worse exchange rate really a cost?

Yes. Whether it appears as a separate fee or a less favorable rate, it reduces what you receive. Record both the rate and any explicit charge.

Should I hold money in USD and wait for a better rate?

Only if your account permits holding that currency and doing so fits your cash needs, risk tolerance, provider terms, and recordkeeping. Future exchange rates are not guaranteed.

How do fees affect my VA rate?

Treat expected payment costs as part of running your business. Check a current quote before agreeing to a long-term rate, and review the beginner VA rate guide. For Philippine recordkeeping, see the BIR registration guide. New to freelancing? Start here.
