Getting the first client is the hardest step — and where most people give up. Here’s how to break the “no experience → no client → no experience” loop.
1. Create your own experience
You don’t need a past client to prove you can do the work. Do a practice project, help a small business for a testimonial, or build sample deliverables (a cleaned-up inbox, a sample social calendar). Proof beats a blank résumé.
2. Pick the right platform
- OnlineJobs.ph — built for Filipino VAs and long-term roles.
- Upwork — global, competitive, good for building a track record.
- Facebook groups & LinkedIn — where many first clients quietly hire.
3. Write applications that get replies
Lead with the client’s problem, not your life story. Show you read their post, name one concrete way you’ll help, and keep it short. We include copy-paste templates in the full guide.
4. Avoid the fake employers
Real clients pay you. If an “employer” asks for a fee, a deposit, or your bank password, walk away. See Is Being a VA Legit?
5. Keep going after the silence
You may apply to 30–50 roles before your first yes. That’s normal, not failure. Track your applications, refine your pitch, and keep showing up.
